Culvert Installation in Elberta, AL

Culverts · Baldwin & Mobile County, AL

The Pipe Under the Drive Decides Whether It Lasts

Culvert installation is where a driveway either gets done right or gets done twice. EMCO Builders installs and replaces driveway culverts across Baldwin County, Mobile County and across South Alabama: pipe sized to the ditch and the water it carries, set at the grade that keeps it flowing, and backfilled and compacted so the drive over it doesn't sink. Most of the washed-out entrances we see failed at the pipe, not the surface.

A culvert job here has to respect our rain. This coast takes some of the heaviest rainfall in the country, and a pipe that's too small, too high, or laid flat backs water into the ditch until it finds a way over your drive. We cut the ditch line, set the pipe, armor the ends, and tie it into the driveway and the grade so the whole entrance sheds water instead of fighting it.

  • Culvert upsizing for heavy flow

New Driveway Entrances Start at the Ditch

Almost every rural drive in Baldwin and Mobile County crosses a roadside ditch, and the county expects that ditch to keep flowing after your entrance goes in. We size the pipe to the ditch, set the flow line so water moves through instead of pooling at the ends, and build the entrance up over it. Where the entrance sits on a county right of way, we flag the road department's requirements early so the pipe that goes in is the one that stays.

The entrance is usually the first piece of a bigger job: a gravel drive back to a homesite, a cleared lot that finally gets access, or a building pad that needs trucks in and out. We build the culvert and the drive as one job so the grades agree with each other from the ditch to the slab.

Replacing Pipe That Quit Working

Culverts fail in slow motion. A crushed end from a heavy truck, rust through the invert, silt packing the barrel, or a pipe that was undersized on day one: the drive starts holding water at the entrance, the gravel washes into the road, and every storm makes it worse. We dig out the old pipe, correct what made it fail, and set new pipe at the size and grade the ditch actually needs.

Replacement is also the moment to fix the entrance itself. If the approach has rutted or the washout has eaten the shoulders, we rebuild the entrance over the new pipe with a proper base and crown so the repair holds. The goal is an entrance you stop thinking about, in any weather.

Cross Drains and Moving Water Under Everything Else

Driveway entrances get the attention, but pipe earns its keep anywhere water has to pass under something you drive on. A long drive that crosses a low spot, a farm lane that cuts across a drainage path, a trail to the back of the property: a cross drain under it keeps the water moving and the surface intact. We read where the water wants to go and put the pipe where it does the most good.

Culvert work ties straight into our excavation and drainage work, so a ditch that needs reshaping or a French drain that needs to carry water to the pipe gets handled in the same visit. One plan for the water beats three separate patches.

How We Work

What Working With EMCO Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

Walk the Property & Free Estimate

We come out, look at the actual ground — the growth, the slope, the wet spots, the access — listen to what you want done, and give you a straight, written estimate. No pressure and no phone-quote guessing.

2

Schedule & Prep

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where debris goes, and account for drainage and any lines or wetlands to protect. You know the plan before anything starts moving.

3

The Work

Our own crew runs our own iron — mulchers, excavators, and dozers — and we keep the site clean and keep you posted. Decades of experience means we read the ground and adjust instead of tearing it up.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, haul off or mulch whatever the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and ready for whatever you are building next.

FAQ

Culverts Questions, Answered

What size culvert do I need for my driveway?
It depends on the ditch and the water it carries in a hard rain, and that's a judgment call worth getting right. Fifteen inches is a common floor around here, but plenty of ditches need more. We look at the ditch, the flow, and any county requirement for that road, then size it so the first big storm isn't the test you fail.
Do I need county permission to put in a driveway culvert?
If the entrance sits on a county or state right of way, the road department usually has a say in the pipe size and placement. The rules differ between Baldwin County, Mobile County, and the municipalities. We flag that early and build the entrance so it meets what the road authority expects.
How much does culvert installation cost?
Pipe size and length, how much ditch work the entrance needs, and what the old pipe looks like coming out all move the number. A straightforward new entrance costs less than digging out a failed crossing and rebuilding the approach. We look at it in person and give you a written number, free, before anything is scheduled.
My culvert washed out. Can you fix it or does it all come out?
We start with why it failed. If the pipe is sound and the water just went around it, rebuilding the ends and the fill can save it. If the pipe is crushed, rusted through, or undersized, patching it buys you one season. We tell you which case you're in and price both ways when both are real options.
How long does a culvert install take?
Most single driveway culverts go in within a day: dig the ditch line, set and bed the pipe, backfill and compact, and dress the entrance. Replacements with a washed-out approach can run longer because the entrance gets rebuilt too. You get the timeline with the estimate, and the drive is usable when we leave.
